Abstract

174,129. Broadhurst, H. F. Sept. 18, 1920. Bottling granular, pulverulent, and like materials.-In filling bottles, tins, or other receptacles by difference of pressure, either above or below atmospheric, three separate tubes communicate with the interior of the bottle, viz. : a suction pipe c to conduct liquid from the supply tank to the bottle, a vacuum pipe d to withdraw air from the bottle, and a breaker pipe e to admit air to the bottle after the vacuum is shut off when the bottle is filled and so break the vacuum, correct the level and drain off the filling and vacuum pipes c, d, e, before the nozzle is raised in the bottle. The apparatus can be used for filling containers with powders. The tubes c, d, e, are carried by a head a, and a soft washer f of india-rubber &c. is arranged round the tubes to make an airtight joint on the top of the bottle. On inserting the nozzle in the neck h of the bottle and removing pressure from the inside. of the bottle by the pipe d, the tube e being closed to atmosphere, liquid is drawn up the suction pipe g and through the tube b into the bottle until the level therein reaches the end of the tube d. The tube d is then shut off from the pump by means of a valve located at some distance from the nozzle, and the tube e opened to atmosphere. The liquid in the suction pipe falls back into the supply tank, drawing back any slight excess of liquid in the neck of the bottle and all the liquid in the filling- tube b and nozzle c, and leaving the level of the liquid in the bottle at the bottom of the nozzle, c. Any liquid that has enter the tube d is drawn towards the pump and may be trapped if desired, so that when the nozzle is lifted out of the bottle there is no drip. Any number of bottles can be connected to vacuum and breaker tubes, common to all.
