Indicating a n d recording- mechanism, applications of.- Relates to supervisory or indicating and recording mechanism for valves, more particularly for automatic sprinkler systems, and comprises means, located at a variable distance from the valve for rendering a record-making device or key inaccessible when the valve is in an abnormal (closed) position. For this purpose the valve hand-wheel 15, Fig 1, is geared, as shown, through gearing 18, 20, &c., a flexible or other shaft 47, Figs. 1 and 2, and gearing 48, 49, Fig. 2, to a drum 51 on which the chain 52 of a record-making key 53 is wound so as to make the key inaccessible for use when the valve is closed. In the open position of the valve, a slotted drum 58 has withdrawn a catch-bolt 60, thereby releasing the door 56 of the enclosing-box 44 to give access to the key. In the gearing box 23, the hub 29, Fig. 5, of a pinion 27 has a flattened portion which is adapted to engage a mutilated flange 31 on an internal-rack gear wheel 28 so that, after the rack 28 has travelled over the pinion 27, the said pinion is locked against further rotation whilst leaving the rack-wheel still free to rotate. Bv this means the drum 51 is arranged to wind up the key to an inaccessible position, or render it accessible, in the initial closing movement or final part of the opening movement, respectively.
