Abstract

171,693. Gerb-und Farbstoffwerke A. Renner & Co., Akt.-Ges. Nov. 15, 1920, [Convention date]. Mineral tanning; combination tanning processes.-Hides are tanned with an arsenic compound which if insoluble in water has been rendered soluble or colloidal. Soluble compounds of arsenious acid, arsenic acid, sulpharsenious acid, sulpharsenic acid, phenylarsenic acid, diphenylarsenic acid or arsenophenol may be used directly as tanning-agents, but insoluble, compounds are mixed with an alkali salt of the corresponding acid, a sulphonic acid of a hydrocarbon, or a tanning-agent prepared by the condensation and sulphonation of a phenol and a hydrocarbon. Specification 169,758 is referred to. The following examples of the preparation of tanning-agents are given : (1) Ansenious acid is dissolved in caustic-soda solution; (2) the solution prepared in example (1) is mixed with chrome alum and any precipitate is filtered off; (3) a mixture of arsenious acid and an artificial tanning-agent prepared by sulphonating and condensing phenol and formaldehyde is dissolved in caustic-soda solution; (4) a mixture of phenylarsenic acid and arsenious acid is dissolved in caustic-soda solution, the resultant liquid being stirred and filtered; (5) a mixture of potassium sulpharsenite and aluminium sulphate is dissolved in water and the solution filtered; (6) a mixture of naphthalene sulphonic acids and arsenious acid is dissolved in caustic soda; (7) arsenic acid is dissolved in caustic-soda solution; (8) potassium sulpharsenite is dissolved in water; (9) an artificial tanning- agent prepared from phenol, formaldehyde and sulphuric acid is dissolved in water and arsenic acid added in the cold, any undissolved residue being dissolved by the addition of soda lye; (10) a mixture of phenylarsenic acid and #-naphthalene sulphonic acid is dissolved in water and the solution neutralized with sodium carbonate; (11) arsenophenol is sulphonated. dissolved in water and the excess acid neutralized; (12) diphenylarsenic acid and #-naphthalene sulphonic acid are heated together and the free sulphonic acid neutralized with sodium carbonate.
