166,562. Holt, H. E. S. Feb. 9, 1916. Projectile fuzes.-Consists in the use of a barometric apparatus for exploding a projectile at a given height in the air. In the form shown in Fig. 1, an ordinary aneroid barometer is used comprising a vacuum chamber a, a spring b with an arm f, a link g, a bell-crank h, j, a chain k, a pulley l and a needle n on a spindle m, and a spring o for controlling the spindle m. The needle n moves over a graduated dial q carrying a contact piece adjustable around the dial, and the needle n and contact piece are connected respectively to terminals s<1>, s, so that, when the needle encounters the contact piece, a firing circuit is closed. In a modification, several vacuum chambers are used in series and actuate a sliding contact device.
