Description

(54) SPORTS PROTECTOR (71) We, CLUTSOM-PENN INTERNA TIONAL LIMITED, a British Company of P.O.
Box 8, Highfield Street, Coalville, Leicester LE6 2BU, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invenion relates to a sports protector for guarding a part of the body from injury when engaging in sporting activities.
According to the invention, a sports protector comprises a piece of elastic fabric and a pad carried by a flexible support sheet, the flexible support sheet being attached to the elastic fabric only at spaced-apart locations.
The term "elastic fabric" is used in this specification to mean a fabric including or consisting of elastic yarns.
The pad may be made of foamed synthetic plastics material and the support sheet may be a non-elastic fabric tube having the pad located in it and stitched at its end to the elastic fabric. The elastic fabric may be in the form of a tube, the pad and support sheet being located inside the elastic fabric tube.
The invenion will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification, in which: Figure 1 shows a knee protector according to the invention, partly cut away, and Figure 2 illustrates an ankle protector according to the invention.
The knee protector shown in Figure I comprises a weft knitted seamless tube 5 containing laid-in covered elastic polyurethane yarns. The knitted structure of the tube 5 is known and is a rib structure, the laid-in yarn extending course-wise and being located between the ribs drawn to opposite faces of the ground fabric. The latter fabric is knitted from a cotton-polynosic yarn. Within the tube 5 (shown partly cut away) is attached another seamless weft knitted tube 6 constituting a flexible support sheet. The tube 6 also has a rib structure and is knitted from a yarn comprising a cotton-polynosic mixture.
Within the tube 6 (also shown partly cut away) is located a substantially rectangular, resilient pad 7 of foamed cross-linked ethylene vinyl acetate. The pad 7 is held in its longitudinal position within the tube 6 by seams 8 and 9 (shown in chain-dotted lines) which join the opposite sides of the tube 6 above and below the pad 7. The tube 6 is attached to the tube 5 by seams 19 and 11, the seam 10 comprising a portion of a hem formed at the upper end of the tube 5, and the seam 11 comprising a portion of a corresponding hem formed at the lower end of the tube 5.
A suitable thickness for the foam pad 7 is 9 mm, the object being to combine adequate flexibility with adequate shock absorbing properties.
Advantageously, the tube 5 is tapered, the wider end being able to accommodate the wider diameter of the leg above the knee; the pad 7 may also be tapered. In one example, the tube 5 is 21.5 cm long and is 8.51 cm in diameter at the upper end and 7 cm in diameter at the lower end (unstretched). The pad 7 is 15.5 cm long, 12.5 cm wide at its upper end and 10 cm wide at the lower end.
The foam pad of cross-linked ethylene vinyl acetate has low water absorbency (only 3% by weight after six weeks' immersion) and the drying time of the protector after washing is therefore low. If the ground fabric of the elastic tube 5 and the fabric of the tube 6 are made of polyester yarn, the drying time can be still further reduced.
The flexible support sheet may be in the form of a flat sheet instead of a tube the pad being, advantageously, located between the elastic fabric and the support sheet. The pad may be secured to it by stitching or by adhesive. The support sheet may be attached to the elastic fabric at a location intermediate the ends of the pad, as well as at locations adjacent the ends of the pad, for example in a larger protector such as is required to protect a shin bone or an arm.
Whilst the elastic fabric is preferably in the form of a tube, it can be in the form of a flat sheet which may have strips of elastic material attached to it for securing round a limb.
Figure 2 illustrates a sports protector according to the invention for protecting an ankle. A tube 14 of elastic fabric has a portion cut away to accommodate the heel 15 of the wearer. Secured inside the tube 14 at the location of the wearer's ankle bone is a sleeve 16 of non-elastic fabric serving as a support sheet for a pad 17 of foamed synthetic plastics material. The pad 17 is located within the sleeve and is retained therein by seams securing the opposite sides of the sleeve together and preventing movement of the pad. The sleeve 16 is attached to the tube 14 by seams 18 and 19.
Sports protectors in accordance with the invention may be adapted to guard other parts of the body, for example the elbows.
WISAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A sports protector comprising a piece of elastic fabric (as hereinbefore defined) and a protective pad carried by a flexible support sheet, the flexible support sheet being attached to the elastic fabric only at spacedapart locations.
2. A sports protector as claimed in claim 1, wherein the protective pad is made of foamed synthetic plastics material.
3. A sports protector as claimed in claim I or 2, wherein the support sheet is a nonelastic fabric tube having the protective pad located in it and stitched at its ends to the elastic fabric.
4. A sports protector as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the elastic fabric is in the form of a tube and the protective pad and support sheet are located inside the elastic fabric tube.
5. A sports protector substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1 or Figure 2 of the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification.
