Twisting wires together; angular bending; breaking.-In a method of twisting together the ends of wires placed round boxes, bales, bundles, packages &c., the wire ends are protected in the same direction from the package, &c., are held adjacent thereto and are gripped at a distance from the package by members which are rotated to twist the wires together and automatically to sever them at the tip of the twist. In the form of tool shown for carrying out the method the twisting head 3, which is bored at 4 to receive the wires, is provided at a distance from the end with two transverse steel pins 5 of slightly larger size than the wires and spaced apart a distance preferably 10 per cent more than the diameter of a single wire. The wires to be twisted together are bent parallel from the box as shown in Fig. 12, and then, as shown in Fig. 6, passed through the bore of the head, which is slightly larger in diameter than the two wires, the end of the head holding the wire against the box, &c. When the tool is rotated, the wires are twisted uniformly along the length between the box a and the pins so as to tension each turn uniformly, and when due to the tightening of the convolutions further twisting is resisted, continued rotation causes severance of the wires at the tip of the twist and a blunt end is formed as shown at Fig. 8. The. bore of the head confines the twist and prevents buckling thereof after completion. The wire required for the twist is preferably drawn first from that round the box until it becomes taut and then from behind the pins. The corners at the end of the head are rounded off to prevent, obstruction by the wire during operation. The binding wire b is stapled to the box and one projecting end is bent to the form shown at b<1> by applying thereto at a distance. from the edge of the box a notch on the under side of the head and pushing down the tool. The other end is bent as at b<2> over a notch 6 in the top of the tool. A metal butt 9 is provided for hammering down the twist parallel with the side of the box.
