(54) IMPROVEMENT RELATING TO HOSIERY (71) We, DOUGLAS BARKER WEL DON - British, LESLIE IVOR COMPTON - British, both residing at:- 26 High Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, formerly of, The Tower House, Pittville Circus, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to hosiery. The object of the invention is to protect the lower legs of sports players keeping protecting pads or padding under control on the leg without creating any restrictions on the legs.
According to the present invention there is provided a sock or stocking having a pouch or pocket to be situated in use over an area of the leg to be protected and for removably receiving a pad or padding.
For a better understanding of the invention, an example will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a partial front view of the sock or stocking incorporating a pocket for a pad or padding.
Figure 2 is a partial side view of the sock or stocking in Figure 1.
A pouch or pocket (1) is incorporated as an integral part of any sock or stocking (2) to contain a pad or padding (not shown) to act as protection to the lower leg (here the area shown is the shin) of the wearer. The pouch/pocket (1) may be inside or outside the sock/stocking (2) (here it is shown outside) and may have a flap (3) to cover and overlap (4) the opening (5) through which the pad or padding is inserted. The opening (5) through which the pad or padding (not shown) is inserted can be of any shape or size and in any position on the pocket (here it is shown (5) as designed to accept a standard shin pad from the top of the pocket) to facilitate the insertion of any particular design of protective padding.The lower end of the pocket is here shown as indented (6) to facilitate a comfortable fitting over the front of the ankle of the wearer, and the sides of the pocket taper converging from the opening.
The flap may be positively secured when closed over the opening (5), for example: interlocking ribs, an elasticated strip a long the lower edge of the flap, or by interlocking fibres known as 'Velcro" (Registered Trade Mark). The upper edge of the flap is shown curved but it may be squared off.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A sock or stocking having a pouch or pocket to be situated in use over an area of the leg to be protected and for removably receiving a pad or padding.
2. A sock or stocking as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the pouch or pocket has an opening in the top for entry of the pad or padding.
3. A sock or stocking, as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the pouch or pocket has a flap or cover for closing or opening an opening through which the pad or padding is entered.
4. A sock or stocking, as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the flap or cover has a positive engagement with the pouch or pocket to maintain the closed position of the opening.
5. A sock or stocking, as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the positive engagement is provided by interlocking ribs on the pouch or pocket and the flap or cover.
6. A sock or stocking, as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the positive engagement is provided by an elasticated strip on the flap or cover to engage the top of the pouch or pocket.
7. A sock or stocking, as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the positive engagement is provided by a fastener comprising interlock

The object of the invention is to protect the lower legs of sports players keeping protecting pads or padding under control on the leg without creating any restrictions on the legs. According to the present invention there is provided a sock or stocking having a pouch or pocket to be situated in use over an area of the leg to be protected and for removably receiving a pad or padding. For a better understanding of the invention, an example will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a partial front view of the sock or stocking incorporating a pocket for a pad or padding. Figure 2 is a partial side view of the sock or stocking in Figure 1. A pouch or pocket (1) is incorporated as an integral part of any sock or stocking (2) to contain a pad or padding (not shown) to act as protection to the lower leg (here the area shown is the shin) of the wearer. The pouch/pocket (1) may be inside or outside the sock/stocking (2) (here it is shown outside) and may have a flap (3) to cover and overlap (4) the opening (5) through which the pad or padding is inserted. 7. A sock or stocking, as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the positive engagement is provided by a fastener comprising interlock ing fibres on the pouch or pocket and the flap or cover.
8. A sock or stocking, as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the pouch or pocket is on the outside.
9. A sock or stocking, as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 7 inclusive, wherein the pouch or pocket is on the inside.
10. A sock or stocking, as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the lower end of the pouch or pocket is intended to fit over the ankle.
11. A sock or stocking, as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the sides of the pouch or pocket are tapered being convergent from the opening.
12. A sock or stocking, as claimed in any previous claim, wherein the top of the flap or cover is curved in shape.
13. A sock or stocking, as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 11 inclusive, wherein the top of the flap or cover is square in shape.
14. A sock or stocking substantially as herein before described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
