Abstract

The stable liquid composition comprises molecularly stabilised enzymes which otherwise would be labile and unstable in aqueous medium. The enzymes are stabilised by treating them with a water-miscible organic solvent, for example 30% aqueous propanediol, in the presence of a nonreactive polymer, for example, 0.1% gelatin, and then by diluting with an aqueous medium up to 1% of the solvent while the polymer concentration is maintained at not less than 0.01%. The composition may be stored for long periods without substantial loss of enzymatic activity. The stability of the composition can be improved by incorporating 1 to 8% of salts and, when the composition is likely to be exposed to a bacterial agent of degradation, 0.01 to 0.3% of a bactericidal agent, into the aqueous vehicle for dilution. Thus the stabilised enzyme of the stable composition may be packaged with a substrate and buffer salts. The composition is useful in medical determinations of human and animal functions.
