Abstract
Small polymer capsules are prepared by polymerisation of water-soluble starting materials in an aqueous carrier solution, in which particles or droplets of an essentially water-insoluble material forming the capsule core are dispersed. The starting material used is monomeric, optionally methylated dimethylolurea or a polymer thereof having a low molecular weight, or urea and an aldehyde. It is polymerised in the presence of anions of a polymeric polyelectrolyte which has an aliphatic main chain, which consists of carbon atoms forming a linear chain and carries hydrogen atoms bound directly thereto, and on average has two carboxyl groups for each four to six carbon atoms belonging to said main chain, the carboxyl groups of the starting material being bound directly to carbon atoms of said main chain, some of them optionally being present in the form of anhydride groups of the formula <IMAGE> , which form a five-membered ring with two adjacent carbon atoms of the main chain. The polymer capsules obtained can be used in paper coating compositions, for inks and insecticides.
