Traversing-cutter type for cutting rectilinearly. -Relates to a machine for cutting hat sweatbands and similar bands either straight in shape or curved somewhat as required. A head is intermittently brought down on the leather or fabric to be cut and a knife carried by an endless band passes along a slot formed partly in the head and partly in the table to sever the material. The width of the strip cut is determined by a fence, and after each cut a flap beneath the table opens and allows the strip to fall down a delivery shoot. The timing of the head and flap is controlled by cams. The drive is frictional and the machine can be stopped by foot mechanism which separates the friction wheels by swinging one of the bearings of the main shaft out of its driving position. The head b with slot c<1> co-operating with a slot formed by the edge of a flap d, which, in the cutting position, bears against the underside of the table, normally presses on the material to be cut, but is lifted after each cut by the rod q, lever p<1>, cam-disk o<1> and worm n' on the spindle n driven by friction wheels j, j<1>. When the cams o<2> rock the lever p<1> to raise the head, the link r rocks the flap d, which then allows the cut strip to fall. The knives m are carried by the chain l which passes round pulleys k, k<1>, k<2>, k<3>. The tension of the chain is controlled by set-screws l<1>. The pulleys k, k<1>, have lateral play to allow the knife to follow the slot when this is curved. The fence e can be adjusted by rack-and-pinion mechanism, a pointer moving over a scale enabling it to be set with accuracy. The friction pinion j is driven by fast and loose pulley mechanism and can be withdrawn from contact with the pinion j<1> by the foot lever s which rocks the bell-crank lever t<3>, the upper arm of which carries the inner bearing of the shaft h<2>.
