Abstract

1528927 Optical apparatus D M HUMPHREYS 22 Sept 1975 [25 Sept 1974] 38833/75 Heading G2J A 3-dimensional visual effect is produced by viewing a 2-dimensional picture 1 (which contains, in combination, the information which would be presented to each of the eyes of an observer of the original scene shown in the picture) via a refracting or reflecting element 2 having a Fresnel structure of parallel or concentric "ribs" 4, so that each eye of a person so viewing sees information having a correspondence with what that eye would have seen in viewing the original scene directly. The 2-d picture may be a photograph taken using a camera having a lens with a diameter of 65 to 70 mm, i.e. a typical interocular distance. It is stated that the astigmatic distortion of the Fresnel element introduces symmetrical modifications of the image perceived by each eye of a viewer. Isolating means 5 (absorbant or reflective) may be provided between the "ribs" 4 of the Fresnel lens.
