Abstract

1527126 Fabric detergent COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 5 Sept 1975 [6 Sept 1974] 36656/75 Heading C5D [Also in Division Dl] A detergent-compatible fabric softening composition comprises 3-30% of a cationic quaternary ammonium fabric softening agent and 5-60% of a water insoluble crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite capable of sequestering calcium ion. The composition is compatible with anionic and non-ionic detergents and their mixtures and can be applied to fabrics during the wash cycle of a conventional laundering process, or during the rinse cycle. The softener contains two aliphatic radicals 12-22 C and may be, e.g. dimethyl distearyl ammonium chloride or an imidazolinium derivative. The zeolite is in particulate univalent (alkali metal, hydrogen or ammonium) cation exchanging form, has a univalent cation oxide (Cat 2 O) to Al 2 O 3 mole ratio of about 1:1 and an Al 2 O 3 to SiO 2 mole ratio of from 1:2 to 1:10, a mean particle diameter of from 0À5 to 12 microns and contains 1% to 36% of absorbed water. It may have a crystal structure of the A, X, Y, L mordenite, chabazite or erionite type. The pore size may be about 4 angstroms. The composition may further contain a bleach, e.g. sodium percarbonate or perborate, an anionic and/or non-ionic surfactant, preferably linear dodecyl benzene sulphonate and a linear fatty alcohol (14-15 C): 11 EO condensate, and an inorganic filler or builder salt, e.g. sodium sulphate and sodium silicate as well as minor quantities of conventional additives, e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and perfume. The composition may be a powder, tablet, aqueous paste or aqueous liquid. It reduces static cling in laundry. Cotton, rayon, nylon, silk, wool, polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose acetate, acrylic and, e.g. cotton-polyester blend fabrics may be treated.
