Abstract
1526443 Plasma generator PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 7 Aug 1975 [3 Feb 1975 (2)] 32978/75 Heading H5H [Also in Divisions B3 and C1] A plasma generator and reactor, useful for carrying out the reaction TiCl 4 + 2BCl 3 + 5H 2 #TiB 2 + 10HCl, and in general for making titanium, zirconium or hafnium borides by reaction of the metal halide with a boron source in the presence of a hot hydrogen stream, comprises plasma heater 1 mounted atop reactant inlet assembly (mixer) 30 and reactor 34. Plasma heater 1 comprises an annular anode 11 aligned coaxially with cathode rod 3, both anode and cathode being mounted in a non-conductive sleeve 9, the anode being surrounded by an annular cooling chamber 13, and the cathode being provided with cooling chamber 7 and with means (not shown) to circulate coolant therethrough. Tube 2 supports and aligns rod 3 and provides a coolant flow conduit. Anode and cathode are spaced longitudinally to provide annular space 21 which tapers to coaxial outlet conduit 23. Plasma gas inlet means 15 has a conduit 17 which communicates through annular conical conduit 19 with the annular space 21. Reactant mixer means 30 comprises two coaxial, longitudinally spaced annular conduits 42, 47 having inlet nozzles 40, 45 (through which reactants are introduced), exit port 48 of conduit 47 being retracted from exit port 43 of conduit 42 to form a conical reactant introduction zone 24. The reactant gas is projected into the stream of heated plasma gas from outlet conduit 23, and opening 31 is coaxially aligned with outlet conduit 23 of anode 11 to provide a straight line path for the plasma gas from generator 1 through reactant mixer 30 into reactor 34. The resultant gaseous mixture is forwarded into the interior of reactor 34 and reacted therein, and the powder product passes to cyclones 38, 39 and thence to solids separation chamber 28, fitted with a bag filter 29. Fig. 2 (not shown), illustrates a reactant mixer means (32) having three slots in place of the two slots of mixer 30.
