Abstract
1524982 Product recovery in ethylene copolymerization IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 March 1976 [7 March 1975] 9561/75 Heading C3L The product obtained by copolymerizing ethylene with a monoalphaolefin in the presence of an aliphatic or aromatic saturated hydrocarbon diluent and in the presence of a catalyst obtained by reacting (a) a transition metal complex of the formula RmMXP where M is a transition metal of Groups IVa to VIa, R is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, X is a singly charged anionic ligand or a monodentate neutral ligand, m is from 2 to the valency of M, and p being 0, 1 or 2, and (b) a substantially inert, finely divided matrix material having surface hydroxyl groups but free from adsorbed water, is recovered by adding a wetting agent to the polymerization product, followed by removal of the diluent by steam distillation to obtain a granular copolymer in the form of an aqueous slurry. Suitable wetting agents include sodium di(ethylhexyl) sulphosuccinate, adducts of C13 to C15 alcohols or nonyl phenol with ethylene oxide and ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block copolymers.
