Abstract

1522759 Composition with controlled detergent release AIRWICK AG 9 Sept 1976 [10 Sept 1975] 37442/76 Heading C5D A solid composition which will release a sustained and controlled quantity of surface active agent over an extended period of time when contacted with water comprises 20-90 wt. per cent of a cross-linked polymer obtained by the polymerization of 0À5-99À999 mol. per cent of at least one hydrophobic monounsaturated monomer with 0À001-15 mol. per cent of at least one di- or polyunsaturated cross-linking monomer and 0-99À499 mol. per cent of at least one hydrophilic monounsaturated monomer, and having molecularly and homogeneously distributed through the polymer 10-80 wt. per cent of a surface active agent or agents, the amount of cross-linking monomer present being such that the composition is water and solvent insoluble and cohesive without being brittle. The composition may be prepared by carrying out an addition polymerization of the monomers in liquid form in the presence of the surface active agent dissolved in the monomer mixture, the polymerization being initiated by free radical catalysis. The hydrophobic monomer may be an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate having a straight or branched chain C 1 -C 30 group; an alkoxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate; a haloalkyl acrylate or methacrylate; a cyano acrylate or methacrylate; acrylonitrile; vinyl benzoate; styrene; a 2-ethoxyethyl phenyl acrylate or methacrylate; a cycloaliphatic acrylate or methacrylate; or a vinyl ether. The cross-linking monomer may be a di or polyunsaturated polyester of a polyhydroxyalcohol and an alpha, beta-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid; an aliphatic or aromatic polyvinylic monomer; a polyallyl monomer; an allylvinyl monomer; methacrylic acid anhydride; or an alpha, omega-diamino acrylamide. The hydrophilic monomer may be a 3-oxyalkyl or alkyl acrylamide or methacrylamide; a hydroxyalkyl acrylamide or methacrylamide; acrylamide; methacrylamide; acrylamido propane sulphonic acid; an alkyl cellosolve acrylate or methacrylate; an alkylaminoalkyl methacrylate; an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; or vinyl pyrrolidone. The surface active agent may be an amine salt of an anionic surface active agent, a non-ionic, cationic, or amphoteric surface active agent, or a mixture thereof. Examples relate to the production of blocks of the composition of the invention, which may be inserted between layers of sponge, e.g. polyurethane, with or without abrasive surfaces suitable for dishwashing, automobile washing, and personal hygiene purposes. Another example refers to performing the polymerization in situ on steel wool, polyurethane foam, nylon mesh, cellulose sponge, or granulated material such as pumice, carborundum, or steel, aluminium or bronze turnings.
