Abstract

1522143 Twisting slivers to form roving: sliver creel: winding roving PLATT SACO LOWELL Ltd 19 Sept 1975 [20 Sept 1974 (2)] 41090/74 and 41091/74 Headings D1F and D1J Winding apparatus comprises means for supporting first and second package tubes in parallel, a material delivery arm arranged to deliver material for winding first to one then to the other of the packages, the arm being arranged to contact each, package at a winding-on point and to deliver material at the point direct to the package under a winding tension localised by the arm in the region of the point, and traversing means for traversing the arm to form parallel-build packages on the tubes. The machine described, Fig. 1, comprises sliver creel 11, sliver drafting and twisting section 12 and roving winding section 13. Creel. Platform 14, Fig. 4, on legs 15 supports rails 17 over cams 18 from which slivers 5 are drawn to pass over rails 17, through guide 19, over drive rollers 20, around guide pins 21 and through forwarding rollers 22. End break detectors are located on either side of rollers 20 to stop the machine. Drawing and twisting. Slivers 5, Fig. 5, delivered by chute 23 are drafted at 24 and are given alternating twist by driven rollers 29 which are axially reciprocated outof-phase. The twisted slivers twist around one another in pairs to form three twofold rovings R. Winding. Two-fold rovings R, Fig. 5, are each wound at a station supporting oppositely driven package tubes 42, 43 mounted on driven stub shafts on members 38, 41, Fig. 7. The shafts are axially movable to release the tubes. Each roving is traversed by a reciprocated bar 46 and depending arm 45 to wind package 48. The arm, having an end shaped shown in Figs. 8 to 10, tensions the roving without allowing the tensioned roving to remain unsupported over a distance longer than the mean fibre length. The arm has blade 55 lying tangential to the package and pressing on the package. When package 48 is wound, bar 46 is moved to the right of tube 43, Fig. 7, so that arm blade 55 bears against the left hand side of tube 42. The running roving is snagged on teeth, directed inwardly and in one direction around the tube circumference, in tube groove 58, and the oppositely rotated tubes 42, 43 break the roving. Further traverse causes the roving to move from one side to the other of arm blade 55, Figs. 8 and 10. The package tubes are driven to ensure that the roving runs at constant speed, the traverse of bars 46 is controlled to build double taper packages and the traverse rate is decreased with package diameter, and the package diameter is monitored to move bars 46 so that blades 55 lie on the package circumferences. The tube driving and traversing are effected by undisclosed means.
