Abstract

Compounds of the formula (I) below in which R are aromatic radicals and X<-> is an anion derived from an acid are prepared by reacting an N,N'-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-4,4'-bipyridyl salt with a primary aromatic amine whose aromatic radical corresponds to the substituent R to be introduced into the bipyridyl ring. The resultant compounds are suitable for use in electrochromatic display devices. When an electric current is passed through a solution of the compound, the latter reacts reversibly to form an intensely coloured free-radical cation by reduction. <IMAGE>
