Abstract

1514057 Drilling fluids HERCULES INC 20 Jan 1976 02184/76 Heading E1F In a drilling fluid, a fluid loss control agent comprises a product of radiation polymerization of acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, alkali metal acrylate, alkali metal methacrylate, or mixtures thereof in concentrations of from 10 to 60% by wt. dissolved monomer in an aqueous medium, the radiation intensity being from 250 to 1,000,000 rads/hr, and the radiation dose being from 500 to 300,000 rads. Preferably the aqueous monomer solution contains from 25 to 99% by weight of acrylamide or methacrylamide and from 1 to 75% by weight of acrylic acid, alkali metal acrylate or alkali metal methacrylate; contains no more than 5 ppm of nickel, iron or cobalt ions and no more than 0.5 ppm of cuprous or cupric ions; and has a pH of from 3 to 13. The growth of active polymer chains may be restricted by chain transfer agents, e.g. lower alkyl alcohols, halogenated compounds, thiosorbitols containing two thio groups and four secondary hydroxyl groups, and mercaptans; and partial cross-linking or branching of the polymer may be effected by using ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble copolymerizable monomers containing more than one ethylenically unsaturated bond. The radiation may be gamma rays, X-rays or accelerated electrons, protons or neutrons. Preferably the drilling fluid contains from 0.01 to 10% by weight of the fluid loss control agent; bentonitic clay; supplemental water loss control agents; conditioning agents, e.g. nigrosine, linae, starches, lignin derivatives and alkali metal polyphosphates; wall building agents, e.g. quebracho, nigrosine, and impectate pulp; and weighting agents, e.g. iron oxides and barytes. The drilling fluid may be water-in-oil emulsions and microemulsions, oil-in-water emulsions and microemulsions, water base drilling fluids, fluids containing both water and hydrocarbon, or fluids containing little or no hydrocarbon.
