Abstract

1509008 Retroactive control systems DART INDUSTRIES Inc 8 July 1975 28697/75 Heading G3 R [ Also in Division B 1] Control of an exothermic chemical process of 'the through-flow type involves the measurement of temperature at a plurality of points downstream of a reagent supply point and adjusting the supply in automatic dependence on whichever of the sensed temperatures is greatest. The invention is described with reference to a pipe-line type ethylene polymerization apparatus wherein initiator supply points are provided at two locations between an ethylene inlet and a polyethylene outlet. Down-stream of each supply point are disposed five thermocouples. In Fig. 4, 114 and 116 represent the two sets of five theremocouples and the respective 'peak pickers' 118, 120 pass on the highest temperature in each set to a respective comparator 130, 132. The latter control (via transducers 152, 154) pneumatic operation of valves 160, 162, 164, 166 determining initiator feed to the supply points (a main and a reserve valve at each point). The comparators may also operate a pen recorder 140. The peak picker circuits Fig. 5 (not shown) also have alarm outputs.
