Abstract

1504346 Prestressed roof slabs ELSPAN INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 Aug 1975 35765/75 Heading E1W A reinforced concrete slab for use as a roof slab is bent into a singly- or doublycurved shape by means of externallyarranged cables 31, 32 connected at points along their length to the reinforcement of the slab by hangers 31, or by struts when the cables are arranged under the slab, the cables being then stressed longitudinally. In the embodiment shown, some cables pass over pillars 34, and other cables are supported by these cables. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, (not shown), trenches (12) are formed in the ground to accommodate the cables prior to stressing a slab into a singly-curved shape, the slab thereafter being lifted into position. The cables may be completely straightened, or encased in steel tubes and only partially straightened, the tubes buckling and thereby stabilising the structure. The slabs may be from ¢ inch to 4 inches thick.
