Abstract
1500064 Lasers COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 18 June 1975 [21 June 1974] 26040/75 Heading H1C [Also in Division G2] A lens for use in high powered CO 2 lasers is made of a suitable material 30, i.e. germanium, arsenic/gallium, zinc/selenium, cadmium/telluride, and has its peripheral zone 12 exposed to a fluid coolant circulating in jacket 6, to prevent heating and consequent increase in absorption of energy from the beam leading to thermal runaway. Gas jets 17, e.g. of dry nitrogen, prevent condensation of atmospheric water vapour. Fig, 1 of the drawings (not shown) illustrates an embodiment using a plain faced window element in place of the lens and only one face is dried by the gas jets.
