Abstract

1495253 Fabric treatment detergents ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 26 Nov 1974 [26 Nov 1973] 54837/73 Heading C5D [Also in Division B2] A water soluble detergent composition comprises: (i) water; (ii) from 1 to 60% by weight of a mixture of detergent ingredients consisting essentially of: (a) from 75 to 98% by weight of one or more surface active agents having the formula where R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, n is an integer having a value of from 10 to 22 and x has a mean value of from 8 to 80 and/or one or more ethoxylated or propoxylated alkanoic acids, alkyl amines or alkylphenols having at least 25 ethylene oxide or propylene oxide units per molecule and wherein the alkyl groups have at least 10 carbon atoms; (b) from 2 to 25% by weight of an anionic surface active agent having the formula and/or an anionic surface active agent having the formula where is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R 1 is an alkyl group having from 14 to 20 carbon atoms, n is an integer having a value of from 1 to 4 and M is an alkali metal or ammonium ion, where R, R 1 , n and M may be the same or different in each of the above formulµ, the said compositions being substantially free from detergent builder salts and other anionic surfactants. Optional ingredients are (c) a water-soluble polyethylene or polypropylene glycol of molecular weight 2000 to 20,000, (d) formalin and (e) an optical brightening agent. Preferably, the pH is adjusted to pH 4 to 6 by the addition of an acid such as phosphoric acid. The composition is used in the treatment of fabrics according to Specification 1,211,734, whereby a waxy coating is formed on the fabric (see Division B2). After use, the soiled fabric is rinsed in cold water in order to remove both detergent and soil.
