1492337 Polyolefin derivatives LUBRIZOL CORP 19 May 1976 [29 May 1975] 20756/76 Heading C3P Polymers of C 2-7 olefins are reacted with an acidic reactant selected from maleic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid or an acyl bromide, acyl chloride or C 1-7 alkyl ester of one of said acids, in the presence of chlorine in a total amount of 0À4-0À9 mole per mole of acidic reactant, the process including the steps of heating an initial mixture of polymer and acidic reactant to at least 100‹ C., introducing chlorine into the heated mixture, and then increasing the temperature to at least 190‹ C. In examples, polyisobutylene is reacted with maleic anhydride.
