Abstract
1490543 Porous silicon nitride UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 11 March 1975 [15 March 1974] 11666/74 Heading ClA [Also in Division C7] Porous silicon nitride is prepared by: (i) preparing a green mixture comprising silicon powder, a binder and an inert, removable additive powder, wherein the additive has a particle size of less than 25 microns; (ii) curing the binder in the mixture; (iii) heating so as to remove the binder; and (iv) firing in a nitriding atmosphere to convert the silicon to silicon nitride and thereby produce the porous silicon nitride; in which method the additive is removed between steps (ii) and (iv). Suitable additives are celluose, amorphous carbon, graphite, and organic plastics. The binder may be a thermoplastic binder or a setting binder or both. Polyvinyl butyral is specified. The mixture may also include a plasticizer (dibutyl phthalate specified) and a solvent for the binder (methyl ethyl ketone specified).
