Abstract

Vehicular lanterns; l a n t e r n shutters; lens - holders special to lanterns.-A headlight is fitted with an upper parabolic reflector and an electric lamp bulb for producing an intense parallel beam of light and with a lower modified reflector and a corresponding electric lamp bulb for producing a restricted beam for use in towns, the two reflectors &c. being preferably arranged in the same casing. In one form, the headlight casing 1, Fig. 1, is formed with a circumferential bead 2 having an inwardly directed flange 3 enclosing an oval-shaped aperture, and the upper parabolic reflector 21 and the lower reflector 30 are each formed on their marginal flanges with tongues 23, 31 engaging apertures in the flanges 3. A plate 10 for holding the front glass is formed with a peripheral flange 14 for engaging over the bead 2 and is provided with apertures 11, 12, Fig. 3, separated by a web 13 and shaped as shown, the front glass 19, Fig. 1, being held against the inner face of the plate 10 by a packing-ring 20 secured by lips 18, Fig. 3, on blocks 15 on the plate 10. The various parts of the headlight are fastened together by screws 17, Fig. 1, extending through the bead 2 and engaging some of the blocks 15. A plate 28 having a curved upper edge corresponding to the upper curved edge of the web 13 and a lower straight edge with an inturned flange 29 is arranged behind the glass 19, and is connected by tongues 26 to one of each of two series of transverse slots in the marginal part of the upper reflector 21 so that, by lowering the plate, part of the light, which would normally pass through the upper part of the opening 12, is obscured. The reflector 30 is an incomplete parabola with its axis about level with the bottom of the web 13 or of the plate 28 when the latter is lowered. A rearwardly bent extension 24 at the bottom of the upper reflector 21 diverts on to the ground in front of the vehicle part of the light emitted by the lower lamp bulb 33. A bent plate 35 is arranged with a notched part 37 engaging the base of the lamp bulb and with a part fitting between the reflector 21 and its extension 24.
