Abstract

1488353 Valves; proportioning valves AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 17 Dec 1974 [22 Jan 1974] 02867/74 Headings F2V and F2F A spring loaded valve assembly comprises a bored body 11 open at one end and slidably housing a member 12 which is urged away from the open end of the bore by a compression spring 13 the reaction of which is supported by a retainer 19 secured to the open end of the bore and constructed to be deformable to vary the axial distance between a spring contacting surface of the retainer and the open end of the bore. The axial distance may be reduced by axial force on the end 21 of the retainer to deform an annular part 24. Alternatively, the end (31), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be deformed; corrugations (36), Fig. 5 (not shown), may be formed or the end (33), Fig. 7 (not shown), may be dished. Methods of attaching the retainer to the body by permanent deformation are described. In a reducing valve for the rear brake subsystem of a vehicle, rear brake supply pressure at inlet 15 acts on a smaller area of a plunger 12 than does the pressure at port 16 to the brake cylinders. The thrust on the plunger thus tends to seat a ball valve 14 and is opposed by the spring 13. A second plunger 27 is acted on by pressure of the front brake system via port 28 to reduce the effect of spring 13 and thereby reduce rear brake pressure when front brakes are operating.
