Abstract

1484837 Thermal storage devices BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 15 April 1976 [18 April 1975] 15531/76 Heading F4U A thermal storage device for heating water passing through a heat exchanger 21 comprises an annular array of bricks 12 disposed in a thermally-insulated casing 1 to form a central space 8 and an outer annular space 16. The bricks 12, as shown in Fig. 2, are shaped in the form of sectors of a ring, and include a groove 13 through which air may flow at constant velocity. The device also includes a fan impeller 25 and a tubular duct 23 for distributing the air uniformly about the casing; and a bypass duct 18 controlled by a deformable disc 19. The bricks are stacked on a refractory support, for example of calcium silicate or calcined alumina. The bricks may be of magnesia, aluminium oxide mixed with a clay binder, or of cast iron. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the by-pass duct 18 is opened or closed by elastic hinges controlled by a bulb and bellows device. The heat exchanger 21 may be in circuit with a safety branch conduit which includes a solenoid valve and a cooling heat exchanger (Fig. 5). In a further embodiment (Fig. 6), the bricks are replaced by annular containers housing materials which have phase change temperatures lying between 250-450‹ C.
