Abstract

1484471 Luminescent resin compositions PELA GRAVISSE 4 June 1974 24669/74 Headings C3B C3P and C3R [Also in Division C4] A photoluminescent material comprises a siliceous filler (e.g. ground quartz glass or ground quartz) which is transmissive of visible light and u.v. radiation in a matrix either of a binder which is visible light and u.v. radiation transmissive or a binder system which is visible light transmissive and is u.v. radiation energy transmissive the matrix containing a crystalline phosphorescent substance, e.g. ZnS containing 0À3% atomic wt. of Cu and an aromatic compound (e.g. anthracene) absorbing radiation in a first wavelength band and re-emitting in a further waveband within the absorption spectrum of the phosphorescent substance. "U.v. radiation energy transmissive" as applied to the binder system denotes a system in which the binder itself is not u.v. transmissive, but it is dissolved in a solvent which picks up energy from a u.v. band and re-emits it in a higher waveband. Porophoric additives may increase the u.v. and visible light transmission. The resin may be polyurethane, a polyester, an epoxy, acrylic or vinyl resin, and a plasticizer may be added.
