Abstract
1477389 Blowing lances BERRY METAL CO 11 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 39604/74 Heading F4B In a blowing lance of the kind having a nozzle head, a central fuel supply passage surrounded by an insulating tube, and three coaxial tubes surrounding the insulating tube to form an oxygen passage and flow and return coolant passages, disconnectable sleeves are provided to enable the parts of the lance to be quickly dismantled. A fuel filler stub 18 is sealed at 21 to the enlarged top 16 of the fuel pipe 13, and seals 17 between the inner most tube 13 and the enlarged head of sheathing tube 14 provide an insulating space. The head of sheathing tube 14 is sealed at 23 to the inside of a head 29 which is removably connected by flanges 30, 36 to the oxygen tube 24. A flange 38 intermediate the ends of the tube 24 serves to removably secure a sleeve 39 carrying a cooling water inlet connection, and an inter mediate flanged sleeve 43 sealed to an enlarged head 47 connected to an oxygen extrusion tube 24<SP>1</SP>. The head 47 is sealed to the oxygen tube 24, and a space 46 between the flange 38, the sleeve 43 and the oxygen tube 24 is vented by bores 46<SP>1</SP> in the flange of sleeve 43 to allow the escape of oxygen passing the seals 49, 50. A lower flange 53 on the water supply sleeve allows a cooling water outlet sleeve 57 carrying the outermost tube 57<SP>1</SP> of the lance and a tube 39<SP>1</SP> dividing the coolant flow and return passages to be removably connected to the lance supply head. The space 32 within the upper end of the head 29 is closed by cap 27, and is vented through screw-in plugs (Fig. 4) which can be removed to allow pressure testing. The insulating space surrounding the fuel pipe may be connected to the space 32 by bores by-passing the seals 17 so that leakage of oil into the insulating space is readily observed. Removal of cap 27, and head 29 allows the seals 21, 17, 23 to be inspected, and a plug 81 allows for pressure testing. The removable connections between the sleeve 39 and the oxygen tube 24 and the lower part of the lance enables the remaining seals to be inspected, or parts of the lance readily replaced. Specification 1,477,390 describes a similar multipassage lance assembly but the claims differ.
