Abstract

1477161 A disazo dye derived from J-acid urea IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Dec 1974 [7 Jan 1974] 00624/74 Heading C4P The novel disazo dyestuff of the formula is obtained in admixture with minor amounts of the two symmetrical disazo dyestuffs by coupling 1 mol of diazotized 2-naphthylamine-6- sulphonic acid and 1 mol of diazotized 4-amino- 3-methylbenzene sulphonic acid with one mole of J-acid urea. The 2 diazotized amines may be coupled simultaneously with the J-acid urea or consecutively in either order. The coupling solution may be used as such without isolating the dye since the dye has high aqueous solubility, and this solubility may be made even greater by adding known solubility improvers such as urea or substituted ureas. Particularly useful aqueous solutions may be obtained by coupling in the presence of triethanolamine so that the product is at least partly in the form of a triethanolamine salt. In one example an alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia is used in place of the triethanolamine, and the dye is isolated by the addition of 5-30% of an alkali metal chloride or ammonium chloride and the paste redissolved in aqueous urea or substituted urea. The novel dyestuff gives yellowishscarlet shades on cellulosic materials, e.g. cotton, but is particularly useful for dyeing paper.
