Abstract

147,331. Barker, G. June 6, 1919. Change-speed gearing; differential rotation of road wheels, permitting by slip of driving connexions. - Change-speed friction gearing drives two propeller shafts 27 differentially, and so may be used for steering a tractor or other vehicle. To each of the shafts 27 is jointed a swivelling shaft 20 carrying upon movable sleeves 21 stepped friction gears 22, 23, 24 adapted to gear respectively for forward driving with stepped gears 13, 14, 15 secured to a central driving- shaft 12. The forward ends of the shafts 20 are adapted to be thrust inwards towards the shaft 12 by toggles 40, and a yoke 50 is provided to distributo between these shafts the thrust of a spring 82 in a casing 80. The effect is that one of the shafts 20 is allowed to slip adjustably with respect to the other on each speed. The casing 80 turns vertically about a pivot 81, Fig. 2, so that the spring 82 can act with adjustable leverage through a pivoted link 70 and roller 71, Fig. 1. upon the yoke 50, which is movable laterally by the steering-gear to distribute the thrust unequally through links 43 to the toggles 40. The speed is varied by moving the sleeves 21 longitudinally in unison by anti-friction rollers 31. Reversed driving is effected through pairs of idle rollers 91, 92, Fig. 2, adapted to connect a friction gear 16 on the shaft 12 to the gears 24. When the gears 24 &c. are in their neutral position, the shafts 20 may be swung inwards to bring the gears 24 into engagement with pivoted spring-pressed brakeshoes 100 to allow of coasting.
