Abstract
1468696 Comminuting apparatus KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 2 Aug 1974 [5 Sept 1973] 34232/74 Heading B2A [Also in Division G6] In a process of comminuting a nuclear fuel and/or breeder element containing nuclear fuel and/or fertile material embedded in graphite, the comminution is performed by milling the element by holding it in engagement with at least one rotating milling cutter tool. In one embodiment of comminuting mill, shown in Figure 1, the fuel element 5 is fed to a pair of milling rolls 1, 2 through a tubular support 4, the end 6 of which facing the rolls 1, 2 is shaped such that a uniform distance is obtained between the support 4 and the surfaces of the rolls 1, 2. On two opposed sides of the support 4 there are arranged recesses 7, 8, 9, 10 through which feeding devices 11, 12, 13, 14 extend. These are rods which are in direct contact with the surface of the fuel element 5 and which are driven in rotation so as to assist in feeding the element 5 against the milling rolls. The milling rolls 1, 2 are driven by means (not shown) in the direction of the arrows 17, 18 so that their teeth engage the fuel elements 5 in a direction opposed to the direction of transport 19 of the fuel elements. The particles cut off by the milling rolls 1, 2 are collected in a container 20 from where they pass via outlet 21 either directly into a fluidised bed furnace or, if the milling operation is followed by pulverisation, into a pulveriser provided for this purpose. The milling rolls 1, 2 have cutting teeth 27 (Figure 3) arranged on their surface in the form of interrupted (helical threads having a trapezoidal cross-section. In a second embodiment (Figure 2, not shown), there are two pairs of opposed milling rolls arranged in series, each pair milling only part of the cross-section of the fuel element. The pairs of milling rolls are driven in opposite directions, the rotation of the first pair being such that their teeth where they engage the fuel element move with the direction of transport of the fuel element whereas the second pair of rolls rotates in the opposite sense.
