Abstract

146,449. Hemphill Co., (Assignees of Bosworth, G. P.). Sept. 20, 1915, [Convention date]. Circular machines.-In bearded-needle knitting- machines of the type in which yarn is fed direct to the needles without the interposition of measuring sinkers, the web-holders are so operated and controlled as to permit the yarn to be fed directly to the needles as in latch-needle machines and to prevent the yarn from being caught under the upper ribs 13 during the formation of heels and toes by reciprocation. The machine is provided with combined stitch-forming. and fashioning cams, substantially as described in Specification 146,450. The beards are pressed at a point d well above the upper ribs 13. The webholder cams which encircle the needles comprise a portion a<4> for placing the web-holders in an advanced or fabric-holding position, and a portion a which places the web-holders in an intermediate position with the forward ends of their upper ribs 13 in line with the needle stems as shown in Fig. 11. V-shaped notches b permit the end web-holders in heel and toe work to yield and recede from their intermediate positions when the loops are drawn down into fabric. The web-holders when in the intermediate position allow the yarn to take a straight course to the needles, as in latchneedle practice, without resting on the tops of the web-holders. In reversing for heels and toes, the encounter with the stem of the first idle needle z, Fig. 3, lifts the yarn up over the upper rib of the adjoining web-holder. This prevents the web-holders from trapping the yarn as they advance the loop-holding position under the influence of the cam a<4>.
