Abstract

1463819 Collapsible steering columns CAM GEARS Ltd 1 Nov 1974 [10 Dec 1973] 57138/73 Heading B7H A support 5 for a steering column comprises a tubular casing 6 on which is moulded a bracket 7 of plastics material. In a preferred embodiment a collapsible steering column 1 is rotatably mounted in bearings 9 provided at opposite ends of the casing 6. Metal lugs 8, Fig. 3, welded on the casing provide a key to prevent the moulded bracket 7 from sliding axially along the casing 6. The bracket 7 has two open ended slots 10 which hold metal sleeves 11 thus preventing damage to the bracket 7 when bolted to the bulk head of the vehicle. Should the driver be thrown against the steering wheel, the column 1 will initially collapse until the steering wheel hits the tubular casing 6 whereupon the sides of the slots 10 will spread leaving the bolts and their sleeves 11 projecting therefrom. The casing 6 may be provided with annular channels around its periphery into which the plastics material for the support bracket enters during moulding.
