Abstract

1458239 Decontamination of radio-active surfaces KERNFORSCHUNG mbH Ges F³r 27 June 1974 [2 July 1973] 28485/74 Heading G6R An agent for cleaning radio-actively contaminated metal surfaces comprises a vaporous mixture of nitric acid, water vapour, and a perfluorinated aliphatic acid or a salt thereof; the nitric acid concentration is below that of the azeotropic mixture with water vapour, and the content of perfluorinated compound is such as to reduce the surface tension of the condensed mixture to about 25 dyne/cm. at 20‹ C. In examples the perfluorinated compound is ammonium perfluorocaprylate. Contaminated articles may be placed in a container and treated with the vaporous mixture produced by boiling a nitric acid solution containing the perfluorinated compound, the solution being either in the container or in a communicating vessel. A similar method may be used to decontaminate the inside surfaces of vessels or plant. Residues may be removed from the surfaces with steam or a jet of water.
