Abstract

1457940 Thermally relaxing films IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Sept 1975 [14 Oct 1974] 44390/74 Heading B5B An oriented, heat-set film of a 1-olefine having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms in its molecule is subjected to a relaxing step such that the residual relaxation (as defined) is no greater than 150 units. The relaxation is brought about by contacting the film with the heated surface of a rotating roller to heat it to a temperature between the glass transition temperature and the melting temperature of the polymer and subjecting the heated film to a longitudinal tension of at most 18 Kg per metre width of the film for a period of from 0À1 to 60 seconds. The longitudinal tension is preferably maintained by controlling the speed at which the film is fed to and withdrawn from the heated roller. The process is exemplified for a film of a propylene homopolymer.
