Abstract

1455712 Testing a telecommunication channel SIEMENS-ALBIS AG 12 Nov 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 52353/73 Heading G1U In a method of testing a telecommunications channel, a test signal which covers the entire dynamic range of the channel is injected into the transmitter, and the resulting signal S1, Figs. 2 and 3, at the receiver is passed via a monitoring network N to a comparison unit P where it is compared K with a signal S6 derived from itself. As described a bi-polar exponentially decaying signal is applied to the channel and for a perfect channel the received signal S1, Fig. 3a, will be identical to the transmitted signal, whilst for an imperfect channel the received signal S1, Fig. 3b, will exhibit deformities. The received signal S1 is integrated 1, Fig. 2, and inverted V1, the result is added A to the received signal, and the sum signal S3 is filtered H 1 and rectified G to produce a signal S5 which is fed to the comparison unit P. For a perfect channel the signal S5 should be constant as shown in Fig. 3a, but for an imperfect system it will contain irregularities as shown in Fig. 3b. The presence of such irregularities is detected, in the comparison unit, by comparing the signal S5 with a signal S6 obtained by subtracting D the high frequency components of the signal S5 from itself, and the resulting signal S7 is indicative of the overall quality of the channel.
