Abstract
1454507 Motor vehicle driving gear M K HARGREAVES 26 Feb 1974 [26 Feb 1973 29 March 1973 11 Sept 1973] 9244/73, 15051/73 and 42728/73 Heading B7H A normally free-running road wheel on each side of a motor vehicle is driven through an endless flexible drive member either from a driven road wheel on that side or from transmission means through which the driven road wheels are normally driven, and means are provided which prevent differential rotation of the wheels on the two sides of the vehicle. The endless flexible drive member may be a belt or rope or may have a core of wire surrounded by toughened rubber. In Fig. 2 there is provided on each side of the vehicle an endless drive member which extends around guide pulleys (not shown) and interconnects wheel members 2 engaging the tyres of a normally driven road wheel and a normally free-running road wheel respectively. Wheels 4 and a shaft 5 provide a cross-connection between the drive members to prevent differential rotation of the road wheels. If the road wheels are steerable the guide pulleys are arranged so that the drive member passes close to the steering axis of the wheel. In a modification the shaft 5 is driven from a shaft coupled to the power unit of the vehicle so that all the road wheels are driven by the wheel members 2. In another arrangement separate endless drive members engaging each wheel member 2 are coupled through the intermediary of a vertical shaft. In Fig. 8, a wheel member 2 engaging each front wheel is driven from a shaft which couples a power unit 14 to a rear axle differential 17 through a clutch 16, a power take-off 18, and endless drive member 19, a vertical shaft and a second endless drive member 21. The drive to the normally free-running wheels may be selectively engageable by mechanism which tensions the endless drive members under the control of an operating lever. Differential rotation of the road wheels on opposite sides may be prevented by a shaft 28, Fig. 12, having enlarged end portions 29 which can be selectively applied to the driven road wheels 25, 26 by springs 30. The shaft 28 may be universallyjointed to pass around obstacles or if the driven wheels are steerable.
