1452831 Dampening apparatus for rotary presses MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURGNURNBERG AG 28 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972 23 Dec 1972] 55291/73 Heading B6C The distributer roller of a dampening system for a rotary printing press is supplied with liquid from a plurality of spraying elements through respective apertures in a screening plate, drive means being provided to cause cyclic movement of the screening plate and thus vary the dampened areas on the roller to distribute the liquid uniformly. The distributer roller 8 may contact a dampening liquid applicator roller (7), Fig. 1 (not shown), or the inking roller (5) of an inking train, Fig. 8 (not shown); when used with a reversible-direction press, the roller 8 together with the spray element housing may be repositioned to contact an alternative inking roller (5) on the other side of the inking train, Fig. 8. In one embodiment, Figs. 2 to 7 (not shown), the screening plate is provided by apertures (11) in one wall of a housing (9) for a plurality of spray nozzles (10); the housing may pivot about a horizontal axis, be moved up and down, or transversely across the roller 8, in a cyclic fashion to provide uniform dampening. In a second embodiment, Fig. 9, the housing 116 is stationary, and nozzles 114 provide spray jets 118 through openings 117 in the housing, and apertures 122 in a longitudinallyreciprocating shield 121. Adjustable slides 120 are also provided for the apertures 122 on the shield 121. The shield 121 is driven from motor 123 through eccentric 124 and crank 125; alternatively the drive can be taken through reduction gearing from the press drive. In a third embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), the nozzles are replaced by centrifuge plates (126) fed by conduits 127 to provide the sprays.
