Abstract

1451437 Venting BRIDGEMORE ENG Ltd 5 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51713/72 Heading B8V [Also in Division F2] A chamber 1 for incorporation in an I.C. engine fuel supply system includes a fuel inlet 2 and a fuel outlet 3, and an air venting valve 5 arranged to open when the liquid fuel in chamber 1 falls below level B. A float 8 controls the valve 5. A second float 9 controls a gauge 6 which visually indicates the presence of air in the chamber. A valve 7 is manually opened during filling of the chamber and after closure of valve 5 to permit venting of residual air and complete filling of the chamber. Air vented through valve 5 passes either to atmosphere through flame trap/filter 11 or to an excess fuel pipe 13. During running of the engine, if the engine fuel pump stops supplying fuel to inlet 2, then when the fuel drops to level C a magnet 9E in float 9 closes a switch 10 to operate an alarm. If the level continues to drop to D, magnet 8E in float 8 closes switch 10A to activate a fuel cut-off device. Outlet 3 may be provided with a non-return valve. The valve 5 and the gauge 6 may be combined in one unit. A pressure relief valve 12 may be provided. Holes 15 in the guides for floats 8 and 9 provide a damping effect upon float movement. The floats may be spring-urged downwardly.
