1450788 Grippers HITACHI Ltd 3 Dec 1973 [1 Dec 1972 29 Jan 1973 31 Jan 1973 21 Feb 1973 7 March 1973 20 April 1973] 55994/73 Heading B8H [Also in Division G3] In the assembly of closely inter-fitting parts 1, 2; (151, 152), Figs. 16, 17 (not shown), there is provided, between shaft 4a and holder 3, a resilient coupling whose tilt, see Figs. 1A-1F (not shown), is sensed to provide signals controlling X, Y positioning of shaft 4a. In the assembly method, part 2 is placed at a predetermined position (P A ), Fig. 2A (not shown), removed from the insertion position P B with a predetermined bias force applied in the Z direction, shaft 4a then being moved in X and Y directions, Fig. 2B (not shown), towards the insertion position. When member 2 lodges in orifice la, as detected by change in output of limit switches 11 actuated by shafts 9, stepping motors 4X, 4Y, controlling positioning of shaft 4a, are switched to control by means of strain gauges (7a, 7c; 7b, 7d), Fig. 4 (not shown), fixed to leaf springs 5, shaft 4a thus being moved until it is within a predetermined ŒX, ŒY, Figs. 5A, 5B (not shown), of a true insertion position, signals to the stepping motor 4Z providing an insertion force. Should member 2 jam during insertion, operation of limit switches 11 causes a renewed positioning of shaft 4a. A stepping motor (4H, Fig. 4) controls gripper arms 3b. In Fig. 6 (not shown) motor (4Z) is fixed, a pallet (12) supporting the member (1) being movable in X and Y directions. In a modified control circuit, Figs. 13-15 (not shown), the insertion force is sensed by summing the outputs (a<SP>1</SP>-d<SP>1</SP>) of the strain gauges, the resultant being coupled with a predetermined level set in unit (52), gate control (54) having hysteresis characteristic (PQST, Fig. 14). For manipulation of metal ring (151, Fig. 16) rings arriving on conveyer (150), a holder comprises tapered shaft and magnet (155, 156) spring supported on shaft (153). Resilient couplings.-The tilt may be sensed by differential transformers, Figs. 8B, 8C (not shown). Limit switches (42a, 42b) sensing the insertion force may operate successively for increasing force, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown). Tilting may be accommodated by pivoting about location (43, Fig. 10), or a member (17, Fig. 8A) may co-operate with balls (102, 103), a leaf spring (5) being provided.
