Abstract

1445113 Colour developer compositions FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 27 July 1973 [28 July 1972] 35995/73 Heading C4A [Also in Divisions D2 and G2] A colour-developer coating solution or dispersion for forming a colour-developer layer of a recording sheet, is prepared by a process comprising reacting an aromatic carboxylic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof with a hydroxide or water-soluble salt of a metal (other than an alkali metal) to form a solution or dispersion containing a corresponding metal compound of the aromatic carboxylic acid as a colour developer capable of forming a colour when contacted with a colour former, the reaction being carried out in an aqueous solvent which contains at least one glycol ether and/or monohydric alcohol present in a total amount of from 10 to 250 parts per 100 parts by weight of the aromatic carboxylic acid, and if necessary or desired, an alkali to assist the solubility of the aromatic acid. Specified monohydric alcohols include C 1-18 aliphatic alcohols and carbocyclic alcohols. Specified glycol ethers include mono. and di-alkyl and aryl ethers of various glycols and polyglycols, some containing ester groups. The non-alkali metal reactants may be hydroxides, chlorides, sulphates, nitrates or acetates of metals of Groups Ib (Cu, Ag); IIa (Mg, Ca); IIb (Zn, Cd, Hg); IIIa (Al, Ga); IVa (Sn, Pb); VIb (Cr, Mo); VIIb (Mn), and VIII (Co, Ni). The preferred aromatic acids are benzoic and naphthoic acids, substituted or not, and many are listed. The aqueous solvent may contain a water-soluble high molecular weight material especially partially saponified P.V.A. as viscosity reducer. The coating composition may also comprise additional colour developers, e.g. acid resins, Japanese acid clay, active clay or attapulgite; binders including proteins, celluloses, saccharoses, polyesters, styrene co-polymers, P.V.A., poly-vinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylates and polyacrylamides; and inorganic pigments. The colour-developer and a colourformer may be provided on the same surface or opposite surfaces of a support or be provided on separate supports. Numerous colour-formers are named, including di- and tri-aryl methanes, xanthines, thiazines and spiro-compounds. Examples describe the preparations of the developer compositions and their application to paper for use with sheets coated with microcapsulated colour-former compositions containing crystal violet lactone or 3-diethylamino-7- dibenzylamino fluorane. Specification 1,444,962 is referred to.
