The compounds of the invention may be made by reacting an aldehyde (II) with a phosphorane (III), where R<SP>1</SP> 6 , R<SP>11</SP> 6 and R<SP>111</SP> 6 are aryl or di-(C 1-7 alkyl) amino, or a phosphonate (IV), where R 7 and R 7 <SP>1</SP> are aryl, aryloxy or C 1-7 alkoxy, and, if desired, converting a protected carboxyl group to a free carboxyl group.
