Abstract

1438977 Tape cartridges IIT RESEARCH INSTITUTE 1 June 1973 26308/73 Heading B8M [Also in Division G5] An endless loop magnetic tape cartridge 11 has a tape coil 128 wound around a hub 125, 126 and supported by a flange 127 and extends from the inner turn of the coil around a non-rotary guide 130, between drag elements 94, 96, around pins 137, 138 on pivoting arms 132, 133, around a pin 140 and thence around a spring-biased tension arm 143 to the outer turn of coil 128. Arms 132, 133 are spring biased to the position of Fig. 2 to provide a taut tape part 25, when the cartridge is not in use, adjacent a front pressure roller-receiving opening and adjacent a bottom capstan-receiving opening 156. A further bottom opening 29 receiver a photo-electric sensor to detect a reflective part on the tape. The drag elements which tension the tape on the inlet side to a capstan drive (14), Figs. 1, 3 (not shown), comprise a stationary part 96 on one side of the tape and a part 94 on the other side of the tape on an arm 151 biased by a spring 150 to urge a pad 94a against part 96. Arm 151 is engageable by a pin on a capstan and transducer head carrying carriage (70) of the tape deck so that when the cartidge is loaded thereon pad 94a is released from part 96 being reengaged therewith on moving carriage (70) to an operative position. In alternative forms, one or both of drag elements 94, 96 are provided on the tape deck. A brake pad 92 on a spring biased arm 153 is operable on the periphery of flange 127 to brake the tape coil 128. A cover 720, Fig. 28, carries an interrupted annular member 731 lying over coil 128 and acting with a lower surface of guide 130 to limit upward movement of the coil 128. Sliders 173, 174, Fig. 2, act via a linkage, Fig. 30 (not shown), to pivot arms 132, 133 inwardly to loop tape part 25 around capstan (14) when the sliders 173, 174 are engaged by rollers (171), (172), Fig. 1, on moving the tape deck carriage (70) to its operative position. Recesses (755), (756), Fig. 29 (not shown), in the cartridge bottom receive fingers (15a), (16a), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the tape deck to allow a downward pivoting movement of the cartridge thereabout to a loaded position on the tape deck. The tape may be “ inch wide carrying 40 or 60 longitudinal tracks recorded with multiplexed video and audio signals and providing about one hour playing time at 120 inches/sec, tape speed. The cartridge may alternatively contain a coil-less short loop, e.g. extending directly from arm 143 to guide 130, each track of which carries one, or a small number, of fields or frames.
