Abstract

1438885 Safety closures OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 1 Oct 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 42496/74 Heading B8T The inner screw cap 12 of a safety closure has on its top panel 30 a ring wall 48 on the top of which are formed spaced apart upwardly directed projections 49, 50, 51 and 52. Drive lugs 24, 25, 26 and 27 formed on the internal surface of the top panel 14 of the outer cap 10 are sized such that they mesh into the openings between the projections 49 to 52 when the outer cap 10 is pressed downwardly against the biasing force of a plurality of leaf spring members, thus allowing removal of the closure when the caps are turned. The safety closure also contains ratchet means formed on one or other of the caps and interposed said caps and means for loosely retaining the inner cap 12 within the outer cap 10. The means for loosely retaining the caps together may be beads 12 (Fig. 1, not shown) and (54) (Fig. 5, not shown) formed at the bottom of the skirt portions. The leaf spring members may take the form of tabs 18, 19, 20 and 21 integrally moulded with the underside of the top panel 14 and inclined to the axis of the outer cap 10. The ratchet means may be "L"-shaped ramp-type portions 36, 37, 38 and 39, or elongated elliptical lugs (361 to 39<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, not shown) formed such that the closure may only be tightened on the container by engagement of the leaf spring members with the ratchet means. Situated on the exterior of the top panel 30, between each of the ratchets, are additional raised projections which help to provide an additional biasing force for the leaf spring members 18 to 21. These projections may take the form of tear drop shaped protuberances 44, 45, 46 and 47, or two circuate radially separated lands (58) and (59), Fig. 4 (not shown). The caps may be made of polyethylene or polypropylene.
