Abstract

1435504 Smoke filter N WALD 17 May 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7395/72 Headings A2C and A2M A filter for tobacco or tobacco substitute smoke includes means for removing part of the carbon monoxide content from smoke passing therethrough by the catalytic oxidation of CO to CO 2 , there being provided a desiccant, to protect the catalyst from wafer and water vapour. Preferably the CO is oxidised to CO 2 using hopcalite a 60/40 mixture of MnO 2 and CuO. The catalyst may have a surface area in excess of 150 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a particle size of 0.8 to 1.6 mm. The desiccant usually precedes the catalyst layer and thereby prevents the passage of water vapour through it. The desiccant may be SiO 2 or LiBr on a charcoal base. The catalyst may be incorporated in or on a fibrous material e.g. cellulose and may form part of a cigarette, cigar, pipe or cigarette holder.
