Abstract

1435126 Laminates COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 9 May 1974 [5 June 1973] 26676/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division F2] A strata reinforcing dowel member of laminated form comprises an outer layer or layers of a base material to which is bonded at least one lamina of a filler or a strengthening material. A "filler material" is defined as meaning a material which is of relatively lower tensile strength than the base material which in conjunction with the base material gives the dowel member its transverse crosssectional dimension and which in use, serves to transmit the strength of the base material to surrounding strata without detracting from the overall strength of the dowel member. A "stengthening material" is defined as being a material which is relatively stronger than the base material which provides strength to the dowel member. In one embodiment, the base material is of relatively high tensile strength, e.g. steel and the lamina is of the filler material, e.g. wood. In an alternative embodiment, the lamina is of the strengthening material, e.g. steel or a dispersion of glass fibres in a resin matrix and the base material comprises a relatively weaker material, e.g. wood. The completed dowel is preferably of circular crosssection and may be made by bonding the lamina between flat outer layers of the base material and shaping, e.g. by turning, the resultant composite assembly to the desired dimension. In an alternative method of fabrication, the outer layers of base material are of semicircular or substantially semi-circular crosssection, the lamina being bonded between the chorded surfaces of the outer layers. A channel may be provided either within the lamina or interadjacent the outer layers with a boundary surface of the lamina as the channel base.
