Abstract
1430432 Diamond tools INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 7 Jan 1975 [8 Oct 1973] 46901/73 Heading B5E A diamond tool comprises at least one diamond particle embedded in a matrix of a metal or alloy with a hot-pressing temperature below 1000‹ C., the matrix incorporating one or more of the elements ruthenium, iridium or palladium. The matrix metal or alloy may be bronze, mild steel, cobalt and cobalt containing alloys, or nickel and nickel containing alloys. Preferably palladium is used with a copper and/or iron matrix, iridium with an iron matrix, and ruthenium with a cobalt mixture, the amount of ruthenium being less than 15% by weight. In an example, a single dodecahedral diamond particle was located in a small hole in a graphite block and the block and diamond placed in a die. Matrix material in powdered form was added and pressed at 230 MW/m.<SP>2</SP> at 875‹ C. After removal from the die and the graphite block, the compact was brazed to a mild steel shank and machined to clear the shoulders of the diamond.
