Abstract

1429816 Waste gas treatment NISSAN MOTOR CO LTD 23 Nov 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 54531/73 Heading B1W Exhaust gas from an I.C. engine having an exhaust manifold is treated in a system comprising a catalytic converter 44 communicable with the exhaust manifold 36, a thermal reactor 46 communicable with the exhaust manifold and a valve 48, 50 operative to establish communication between the catalytic convert or and the manifold when a selected engine operating parameter is below a predetermined value and to prevent communication between the catalytic convertor and the manifold when the parameter is above the predetermined value. the thermal reactor being in communication with the exhaust manifold at least when the parameter is above the predetermised value. Butterfly valves 48, 50 are mounted on spindle 52 which is rotated by a solenoid 54 against the bias of a spring 53. The solenoid is energised when one or more engine operating conditions such as engine speed or exhaust gas temperature or flow rate exceed a pre-determined level, to close valve 48 and open valve 50 so that exhaust gas is directed through the thermal reactor. Secondary air is supplied to the exhaust manifold by a pump 20 supplied with clean air from the filter 16. The pump delivery pipe 24 leads to a chamber 26c and hence to a nozzle 32 via a check valve 28. The amount of air is regulated by a diaphragm operated valve 26e controlling a port leading to a bypass line 27. The diaphragm is subject to intake manifold pressure through a line 30. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) the thermal reactor is upstream of the catalytic reactor so that exhaust gas passes first through the thermal reactor and then through the catalytic reactor when the engine is running light. Under heavy load a valve between the reactors is closed and a second valve in a pipe leading from the thermal reactor to atmosphere is opened.
