Abstract
1428244 Dispersion stabilizer polymers DOW CHEMICAL CO 24 April 1973 [24 April 1972 (2)] 19355/73 Heading C3P A dispersion stabilizer polymer comprises a backbone which is soluble in organic media and a side chain, attached to the backbone, which is insoluble in organic media, the side chain comprising a polymer of a monomer which contains a proton donor or proton acceptor group, and the backbone being the product of the reaction of (IIA) a poly-12-hydroxy stearic acid having a molecular weight of from 300 to 3000 and (IIB) an aziridinyl compound having the formula where R 1 is hydrogen or CH 3 , R 2 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R 3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and the weight ratio of (IIA) to (IIB) being from 90 : 10 to 80 : 20. A dispersion of a vinyl polymer in an organic liquid may be prepared by polymerizing the monomeric constituents of the polymer in the organic liquid in the presence of the dispersion stabilizer polymer. In the examples a macro-monomeric precursor prepared by treating a carboxyl terminated poly-12-hydroxystearic acid with 2-(1- aziridinyl) ethyl methacrylate, N-(ar-vinylbenzyl)aziridine or 2-(4-vinylphenyl) ethyl aziridine is copolymerized with methyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, 2-(1-aziridinyl)ethyl methacrylate, N-(ar-vinylbenzyl)aziridine, 2- (4-vinylphenyl) ethyl aziridine, hydroxy ethyl acrylate, styrene, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, trimethylamine methacrylamide, 1,1,-dimethyl- 1-(2-hydroxypropyl) amine methacrylamide, 1,1 - dimethyl - 1 - (2,3 - dihydroxypropyl) amine methacrylamide, methylol acrylamide, vinylidene chloride, methyl acrylate, vinyl chloride, hydroxypropyl acrylate and butyl acrylate in the presence of butyl acetate, isooctane, α-(t-butylazo)isobutyl nitrile, hexane, azobisisobutyronitrile, VM and P naphtha, noctyl mercaptan and xylene. In Example III hydroxypropyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate are copolymerized in the presence of hexane, isooctane, n-octyl mercaptan, azobis-isobutyronitrile and a dispersion stabilizer polymer.
